NSW: Cancer trials get under way to improve patients' lives

Cancer patients will be able to live more comfortably while undergoing radical new
treatment under a program of clinical trials in New South Wales.

The trials will test treatments, including surgery and new drugs, for a range of cancers.

The council's head says there's no guarantee the trials will enable patients to live
longer, but their quality of life is likely to be enhanced.

Cancer Council chief executive Dr ANDREW PENMAN says it is hoped 25 per cent of cancer
sufferers will be involved by 2010.

The trials will give patients access to new treatments before they are approved for
mass distribution in Australia.

Up to 600 patients a year are expected to participate in the first round of trials.
