A BIGGER ARENA.(MAIN)

Without so much as a pass caught or a block thrown, the Arena Football League has moved into the big time.

First, the players were talking about forming a union. Then, they sued the league in an attempt to assert their rights to free agency, which happens to be the path to much higher salaries for pro athletes. They also want what's standard elsewhere -- medical plans and pension benefits. And now the league says the upcoming season is canceled.

What triumphs is irony. There isn't, in this day, a more significant rite of passage for an up-and-coming sports league than a lockout. Even an odd one like this. The owners are insisting that there won't be a season …
