NSW:Second person charged with Belanglo murder

SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP - A young man has joined Ivan Milat's relative in being charged
with the axe murder of 17-year-old David Auchterlonie in the Belanglo State Forest.

Cohen Klein, 18, of Bargo, southwest of Sydney, now faces three charges: murder, concealing
a serious offence and being an accessary after the fact to the murder.

He was formally charged in Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday.

A teenaged relative of Ivan Milat has already been charged with murdering David on
November 20 in the NSW southern highlands forest where Ivan Milat killed his victims.

Klein is due to appear in the same court on January 12.

A third person, 18-year-old Chase Day, who reported the murder to police the next day,
was granted bail last week after being charged with being an accessary after the fact
to murder.

At that hearing, the magistrate at Goulburn Local Court lifted the non-publication
order that had been placed on his name.

His case is also due to be mentioned on January 12 at Goulburn.

QLD:Police union to discuss pay with Premier

BRISBANE, Aug 8 AAP - The Queensland Police Union will meet with Premier Anna Bligh
on Friday in an attempt to resolve the current pay row.

Police have been offered a 2.5 per cent pay rise a year for the next three years, but
their union said it was below inflation forecasts and below the 4.5 per cent pay rise
given to other public servants.

While the government says it is working to budgetary constraints, in July they said
they were prepared to discuss police working more weekend shifts in exchange for a bigger
pay increase.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the union was meeting with Ms Bligh
at 3pm (AEST) on Friday.

"We continue to negotiate in good faith, it hasn't been easy, but we will continue on," he said.

"I'm hoping we can achieve a fair deal, which is what other public sector employers
have got in the community.

"We are still nutting away and it's very delicate, so I can't divulge anything."

Police Minister Neil Roberts on Sunday said the two parties were in the middle of "robust"

discussions.

"Since the premier announced the opportunity for the police union and police to go
above 2.5 per cent there have been a number of meetings and negotiations taking place,"

he said.

"A range of matters are obviously on the table and hopefully we'll reach an outcome."

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said while he was hopeful there would be a satisfactory
resolution as soon as possible, he was not directly involved in discussions between the
government and the union.

Fed: Australia a magnet for people smugglers: opposition

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - The federal opposition says the arrival of another boatload of
asylum seekers shows that Australia has become a favoured destination for people smugglers.

A boat carrying 11 suspected asylum seekers was intercepted near the Ashmore Islands
off northern Australia late on Monday by Border Protection Command.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says the continuing arrival of boat
people is putting the assessment system under too much pressure.

"The government's indifference and weakness, both in their border protection policies
and the decisions they've taken, have ensured that Australia has become a magnet for people
smugglers," Mr Morrison told ABC radio on Tuesday.

"So we're now left with a situation where we have Christmas Island full, boats arriving
pretty much at will and this must be putting extraordinary pressure on the processing
systems that need to be undertaken under such overcrowded conditions."

The latest suspected asylum seeker arrivals will be taken to nearby Christmas Island
for questioning and to undergo security, identity and health checks.

The interception comes only days after the federal government rejected claims overcrowding
in detention facilities on Christmas Island had forced it to move 30 Afghan asylum seekers
to Melbourne for processing.

It is the 59th asylum seeker boat to have been intercepted in Australian waters so far this year.

Fed: Rio to cut up jobs as aluminium prices, demand falls

Fed: Rio to cut up jobs as aluminium prices, demand falls

SYDNEY, April 7 AAP - Rio Tinto Ltd will shed 135 full time jobs and 570 contractor
positions after slashing bauxite production at its Weipa mine in Queensland and pulling
back on a refinery expansion project.

The decision to slow construction of the Yarwun alumina refinery expansion in Gladstone
and cut 2009 bauxite production by 22.7 per cent to 15 million tonnes, from 19.4 million
tonnes last year, follows sharp falls in prices and demand for alumina and aluminium.

As a result, around 100 permanent roles at Weipa and some 570 contractor roles in Gladstone
will be lost.

As well, about 35 permanent roles will be shed at the Yarwun refinery and at Boyne
smelters, also in Gladstone.

Rio Tinto head of Alcan bauxite and alumina Steve Hodgson said a depressed market due
to the global economic crisis and downturn meant "tough decisions" are necessary.

"Even with alumina industry capacity cuts equivalent to 21 million tonnes per year
since the beginning of the crisis, including cuts of 12 million tonnes made since January,
there is still little improvement in the alumina price," he said.

At current prices, around 70 per cent of the industry is operating at a financial loss,
Mr Hodgson said.

Work on the Yarwun alumina refinery expansion will be slowed to reduce the rate of
capital expenditure.

The change to the construction schedule will result in a revised completion date in
the second half of 2012.

Mr Hodgson said cost reduction and cash conservation initiatives are being implemented
across all of Rio Tinto's Alcan business units and operations.

"We are strongly focused on minimising costs and conserving cash, and this work is
ongoing in our operations as we continue to closely monitor market conditions," he said.

He said the company would ensure all affected employees receive their full entitlements
and have the support and assistance they need in the coming weeks.

Rio Tinto shares fell 8.9 per cent, or $5.25, to $53.85 at 1143 AEST.

FED: Most murders committed with knives, as gun use dives

New crime statistics reveal Australians are now far more likely to be murdered with
a knife than a gun .. and it'll probably happen in their own homes .. at night.

In 2006-07 .. some 44 per cent of homicide victims were killed with a knife or other
sharp instrument .. the highest proportion of knife deaths since the national homicide
monitoring program began 18 years ago.

Only 11 per cent of murder victims were killed with a firearm .. the lowest proportion
on record and down four per cent on 2005-06.

Shooting deaths peaked in 1993 .. when 29 per cent of victims were killed by a gun.

The statistics also show homicide rates have fallen by a third in the last six years.

Fed: Farmers question focus on water buybacks

Farmers are concerned the federal government's three billion dollar irrigation water
buyback will slash food production and threaten rural communities.

Water Minister PENNY WONG has announced today the government will purchase water rights
from irrigators .. as part of a 10-year 13 billion dollar plan to secure the nation's
water.

But Irrigation Australia Limited says the plan puts too much emphasis on purchasing
water rights and not enough on improving irrigation efficiency.

IAL national chair STEPHEN MILLS says on-farm savings can potentially deliver much
more water to the environment than the purchase of water rights.

And opposition water security spokesman JOHN COBB says the move will drive up food
prices by cutting agricultural production.

Qld: Beattie does backflip on Speaker guidelines

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE has done a backflip on the drafting of new guidelines
for the Speaker of Parliament, allowing the opposition to have a say.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission is currently investigating travel and entertainment
expenses incurred by Speaker RAY HOLLIS.

The probe has sparked a review of guidelines governing the Speaker's office.

Mr BEATTIE had previously denied the opposition any opportunity to be involved in the
drafting of new guidelines.

However, in a letter to opposition leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG tabled in parliament
today, Mr BEATTIE's asked for the opposition's input.

A spokesman for Mr SPRINGBORG says the premier only changed his position because the
opposition had requested a copy from the Commission.
